Windows 8/8.1

When is end of support?

Support for Windows 8 ends January 10, 2023. There will be no more security updates or technical support for the Windows 7 operating system. It is very important that customers and partners migrate to Windows 10. Customers moving to a modern operating system will benefit from dramatically enhanced security, broad device choice for a mobile workforce, higher user productivity, and a lower total cost of ownership through improved management capabilities.

What does this mean to you?

It means you should take action. After January 10, 2023, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for Windows 7. Security updates patch vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malware and help keep users and their data safer. PCs running Windows 8 after January 10, 2023, should not be considered to be protected, and it is important that you migrate to Windows 10 so you can receive regular security updates to protect your computer from malicious attacks.

Will my machine be able to upgrade to Windows 10?

We have yet to encounter a machine, with no hardware/software conflicts, that we haven't been able to upgrade to Windows 10

Can I upgrade it myself?

If you have the knowledge, yes. The process of upgrading from 8 to 10 is much easier than previous upgrade paths. We do not recommend updating it yourself if you are apprehensive about it in any way. When in doubt, give us a shout.

Do you recommend Windows 8?

Before Windows 10 arrived we recommended Windows 8 more for Residential customers, rather than Business use. At the time there were a lot of software companies that were not ready for the switch and didn't release compatible software. The release of Windows 8.1 made things better, but it still wasn't the best option for businesses. With the release of Windows 10, we don't typically install or sell Windows 8 anymore.

Is windows 8 as awful as everyone says?

No. Software support aside, there were no problems with Windows 8 as far as Operating Systems go.  What it boiled down to most of the time was how Windows 8 looked. The "Metro/Live Tile" view was off putting to some. Lack of the classic start menu was another put off. Aesthetics aside, Windows 8 was more secure and operated faster than Windows 7. You wouldn't say your new car is terrible because the gear shift isn't in the same spot as your old car, right? Just takes some getting use to.
